Having the extraordinary French fencer Sara Balzer (Strasbourg, 1995) in Lima is a true privilege. She is a two-time Olympic silver medalist (Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024), gold medalist at the 2025 Tbilisi World Championships (Georgia), and silver medalist in Cairo 2022 (Egypt) and also in Milan 2023 (Italy). She is a multiple World Cup medalist (2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026), a three-time European Championship gold medalist (Antalya 2022, Krakow 2023, and Genoa 2025), and was ranked number one in the world for two seasons (2022-2023 and 2023-2024). Furthermore, in 2021 she was named a “Chevalier dans l’ordre national du Mérite” by the French government.

Sara recently came to the Peruvian capital to compete in the Women's Sabre World Cup Lima 2026, held at the National Sports Village (VIDENA). She won the team silver medal alongside her talented and determined teammates Sarah Noutcha, Faustine Clapier, and Tori Toscane. I was able to interview her on Sunday, May 24, minutes before the hard-fought semifinal between France and Hungary.

 

We are here, in the VIDENA of Lima, with Sara Balzer, the best in fencing of the world. Thank you for these minutes. I would like to know how do you feel here. I don’t know if it’s your first time here.

No, it’s my second time, because last year we had also a World Cup here. I really enjoyed it here. It’s a way more hotter the weather than in France, so it’s more difficult during the match. But it’s a good training for the next competition, the European and World Championship, and I can get some good training for us, so I‘m really happy.

 

What is your objective now, in this year, in Lima? You are the champions (by team), I suppose you want to repeat the title.

Yes, I would like to do it well today, but I’m also here to train for the championship and to take some information. So, it’s a good training for us and to prepare the World Championship.

 

Which are the countries you consider the most dangerous for get your objective this year?

I think there are many. There is Korea, there is Russia, there is Hungary. We will have now Hungary (in the semifinal), we’ll see.

 

You see (yourself) winning the gold in Los Angeles 2028?

Yes, it’s the main goal. The Olympics in two years.

 

Why do you consider the level of Europe in fencing is very much higher than the Latin American level? This always happens in all the World Cups or Olympic Games.

I think because fencing is a way more famous in these countries, there is more fencers. I can think maybe in few years the level will be better here, for sure get the best of the best. I think Europe has many countries.

 

Fencing is a national sport in France.

Of course, it’s a national sport, but it’s not like the most famous.

 

Is easy for you be a star of your sport in your country, in France? Is easy for you take this responsability every day…

Yes, of course.

Tener a la extraordinaria esgrimista francesa Sara Balzer (Estrasburgo, 1995) en Lima es un verdadero lujo. Ella es dos veces medallista olímpica de plata (en Tokio 2020 y París 2024), oro en el Campeonato Mundial Tbilisi 2025 (en Georgia) y plata en El Cairo 2022 (Egipto) y también en Milán 2023 (Italia), múltiple medallista de la Copa del Mundo (años 2023, 2024, 2025 y 2026), tres veces medalla de oro en el Campeonato Europeo (Antalya 2022, Krakow 2023 y Genoa 2025) y fue primera del ranking mundial durante dos temporadas (2022-2023 y 2023-2024). Además, en el año 2021 fue nombrada “Chevalier dans l’ordre national du Mérite” por el Gobierno francés.

Sara vino recientemente a la capital peruana para competir en la Copa del Mundo de Sable Femenino Lima 2026, que se realizó en la Villa Deportiva Nacional (VIDENA). Ella ganó la medalla de plata por equipos, junto a sus talentosas y guerreras compañeras Sarah Noutcha, Faustine Clapier y Toscane Tori. Pude entrevistarla el domingo 24 de mayo, minutos antes de la disputada semifinal entre Francia y Hungría.

 

Estamos aquí, en la VIDENA de Lima, con Sara Balzer, la mejor esgrimista del mundo. Gracias por estos minutos. Me gustaría saber cómo te sientes aquí. No sé si es tu primera vez.

No, es mi segunda vez, porque el año pasado también tuvimos una Copa del Mundo aquí. La disfruté mucho. Hace mucho más calor que en Francia, así que es más difícil durante el partido. Pero es un buen entrenamiento para la próxima competición, el Campeonato Europeo y Mundial, y puedo obtener un buen entrenamiento para nosotras, así que estoy muy contenta.

 

¿Cuál es tu objetivo ahora, este año, en Lima? Son las campeonas (por equipo), supongo que quieren revalidar el título.

Sí, me gustaría hacerlo bien hoy, pero también estoy aquí para entrenar para el campeonato y obtener información. Así que es un buen entrenamiento para nosotras y para prepararnos para el Campeonato Mundial.

 

¿Qué países consideras más peligrosos para lograr tu objetivo este año?

Creo que hay muchos. Está Corea, está Rusia, está Hungría. Ahora tendremos a Hungría (en semifinales), ya veremos.

 

¿Te ves ganando el oro en Los Ángeles 2028?

Sí, es el objetivo principal. Los Juegos Olímpicos en dos años.

 

¿Por qué consideras que el nivel de esgrima en Europa es mucho más alto que en Latinoamérica? Esto siempre sucede en todas las Copas del Mundo y los Juegos Olímpicos.

Creo que, como la esgrima es mucho más popular en estos países, hay más esgrimistas. Creo que en unos años el nivel mejorará aquí, seguro que tendremos a los mejores. Creo que Europa tiene muchos países.

 

La esgrima es un deporte nacional en Francia.

Por supuesto que es deporte nacional, pero no es el más famoso.

 

¿Es fácil para ti ser una estrella de tu deporte en tu país, en Francia? ¿Es fácil para ti asumir esta responsabilidad cada día…

Sí, por supuesto.
